The Community Multicultural Commission reviewed a completed order of promotional items Sept. 18 and discussed how to use giveaways and a trivia wheel at upcoming public events to increase awareness of the commission.
City staff representative Courtney provided the purchase summary and invoice and said items will arrive before the commission's next event. The commission discussed using the items at Safety Fest and the Children's Fall Festival and agreed to draft trivia questions for an event wheel to encourage engagement.
Courtney said the commission had been allocated an outreach budget (amount shown in packet) and that staff ordered a mix of giveaways based on members' prior preferences. The receipt shared at the meeting lists quantities for several items: 200 microfiber terry towels, 100 umbrellas and 100 fanny packs, plus LED flashlights. Courtney said the invoice total was shown on the receipt and that the order should arrive before the next event; she also said she kept the purchase under the available budget.
Commissioners discussed on‑site tactics: placing a giveaway item on the prize wheel, asking a trivia question before awarding the item and limiting giveaways so supplies last through events. They also discussed collecting email addresses for a mailing list but noted the city will not automatically subscribe people — staff said if commissioners collect emails they would need to submit them for inclusion and that the city would not take on automatic subscription of collected addresses.
Commissioners flagged the CMC's existing QR code: Courtney said the QR code currently links to the Garland Independent School District website because GISD maintains a larger database; there is no direct QR link to a standalone CMC subscription page. The commission asked staff to explore options to tie a QR directly to a CMC sign-up or a CMC-managed database for event follow-up.
Commissioners also approved ordering a smaller dry‑erase prize wheel for events and discussed whether outreach items should continue to carry the CMC logo (they will) and whether to change specific giveaways in future budgets. Staff said the items should arrive before November events.
