Lenoir City Council accepted a federal grant to buy a mobile skid unit — a compact, high-pressure firefighting system — for the fire department.
City staff said the grant is a 100% federal award for $45,000 that the city will draw down after invoicing. “This is a 100% grant from the federal government. It's $45,000,” staff said during the meeting.
Staff described the skid unit as a high-pressure system similar to a pressure washer, designed for brush and off-road fires and intended to be mounted in the bed of a pickup truck for rapid response in areas where full-size apparatus cannot reach. One council member asked about operating costs; a staff member acknowledged the unit can be expensive to operate but said its mobility makes it appropriate for locations large trucks cannot access.
Council members moved and seconded the acceptance and voted to approve the grant acceptance. The city will draw down funds upon receipt of invoice and then place the skid unit into service on the department’s pickup vehicle.
