Commissioners approve ordinance to clarify disposal and online auction of surplus county property

Daviess County commissioners approved revisions to the county ordinance governing disposal of personal property to clarify where and how surplus items may be sold and to add an online auction option.
Officials said the revised wording removes the prior assumption that surplus items would be sold only at the courthouse and instead permits disposal or sale at the item’s location when appropriate. The ordinance change also explicitly authorizes online auctions as a disposal method. Commissioners noted that equipment that can be repurposed within county offices is not subject to disposal under the ordinance.
Commissioner Mike Keith moved to approve the ordinance; Commissioner T.C. Cook seconded the motion. The motion passed 3-0.
County staff said the change is intended to match current practices following the courthouse move and to streamline disposition of property that is no longer needed by county offices.
