Monroe County auditor reports roughly $8.15 million projected deficit across funds

Monroe County Auditor Carly Woodruff told the County Council on Sept. 11 that the county’s current preliminary budget projections show a shortfall across all funds of about $8,151,000 and a deeper deficit of $11,195,723 in levy funds.
Woodruff said the figures came from the county’s Gateway system and reflected updates from the previous night. She also said the worksheet distributed to council members included a “cheat sheet” showing the county’s ordinance-required minimum fund balances and the 2025 levy for comparison.
The auditor did not recommend a specific remedy during the short presentation; she answered no follow-up questions and concluded by saying staff would leave the document for council review. Council members proceeded immediately to the evening’s scheduled department budget hearings.
The auditor’s figures will be used as the baseline for the council’s final budget review, with a public hearing scheduled for Sept. 30 and final adoption set for Oct. 14.
