Henry Ford Health Systems presented life-saving awards Sept. 9 to Roseville Fire Department personnel who responded to a June 16 motor-vehicle accident involving a child, hospital staff told the Roseville City Council.
Kevin St. Peter, EMS coordinator for Henry Ford Hospital, described the call: crews arrived about four minutes after dispatch, extricated the child within three minutes at the scene and completed treatments and transport to the hospital in roughly seven additional minutes — about 13 minutes from dispatch to hospital care. St. Peter said the child had been pinned beneath a seat and required extrication tools, had multiple injuries and that a language barrier complicated on-scene history taking.
Dr. Lisa Hill, pediatric trauma coordinator at Henry Ford St. John Hospital, provided hospital follow-up, saying the child sustained a right femur fracture, concussion and multiple lacerations and contusions; the child underwent surgery the next day and was discharged home about four days after admission. Hill credited the Roseville firefighter-paramedics for fast care and emphasized the importance of proper car-seat restraints for children.
Fire department personnel recognized at the meeting included Captain Fredrikson (presented as "Captain Bridal Fredericksen" in the transcript), Lieutenant David DeMar and firefighter-paramedics Mitchell Sand and Dakota Junkin; staff also noted members who could not attend. City leaders praised the firefighters’ professionalism and the hospital team’s follow-up care during the presentation.
No formal council action was required; the presentation served as recognition of the crew and the hospital’s trauma team for their roles in the child’s recovery.
