Board revises committee-appointment process, endorses two-year terms and voting when multiple applicants apply
Summary
The Martin County School Board agreed Sept. 16 to update how members are appointed to external and advisory committees: the board signaled intent to rescind several standing committee policies, move some committees to ad hoc status or bylaws, require two-year terms and use a board vote when more than one member seeks the same appointment.

The Martin County School Board on Sept. 16 directed staff to update multiple committee-appointment policies and adopt a two-year term limit for board committee assignments.
Board members discussed a staff-proposed consolidation and clarification of committee roles. The superintendent and staff identified four board-policy committees proposed for rescission or replacement with ad hoc processes or Neola (model) language: the boundary advisory committee, district advisory council, school calendar committee and the strategic plan committee. Staff advised that statutory committees (for example, the Children27s Services Council and the Value Adjustment Board) must remain.
Board members supported a two-year term for committee service to encourage rotation and broader participation. They also agreed the board will use a vote among members if more than one board member seeks appointment to the same committee.
Board member Powers moved to proceed with the revisions discussed and to set a two-year term limit; board member Russell seconded. The motion passed by voice vote. Staff said required policy changes will follow the district27s policy-adoption process, which typically includes public notice and readings before final adoption.
Staff listed committees to remain, to be updated to Neola language or to be designated as bylaw or statutory positions. The board asked staff to return the updated policy language through the standard policy-review process and then to implement appointment timing after the December reorganization.
No changes were made to statutory committee obligations; staff will bring revised policy drafts to the board for formal readings as required by district policy.
