Brentwood Select Board appoints Robert Montegari to fill vacancy

The Brentwood Select Board on Sept. 16 appointed Robert (Bob) Montegari to fill a vacancy on the five-member board after hearing presentations from three applicants and public comment.
The board opened the seat application process at the meeting and allowed each applicant two minutes to speak. Applicants were Robert Montegari, Doug Finnan and Jeff Gardner. After candidate remarks, board members asked each candidate questions and then opened the floor to members of the public to speak in support of candidates.
The appointment mattered to the board because members said an experienced member was needed quickly as they approach budget season and ongoing personnel and health-insurance discussions. Several residents urged the board to choose Doug Finnan because of his steady attendance at multiple town committees; some other residents and board members argued the town needed someone who could “hit the ground running.”
All three applicants described community service and availability. Jeff Gardner said, “I never intend on moving again, ever. Moving stinks,” and said he brings municipal budgeting and emergency-services experience. Doug Finnan described long service on the planning board and frequent attendance at town meetings. Montegari said he’d served previously on town committees and emphasized experience with budgets and town operations.
After discussion, a motion to appoint Robert Montegari carried; the board recorded three affirmative votes and one abstention. Montegari was sworn in at the meeting and signed the oath of office immediately afterward.
The board chair said the appointment is to fill the seat for the balance of the term and noted there will be multiple openings at the next election in March. The board did not change any committee liaison assignments on the record at the meeting; members said they will discuss reassignments separately.
The new member was sworn in during the same meeting. The board directed staff to file the paperwork for the appointment with the town clerk.
