HARNETT COUNTY — The Harnett County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday approved rezoning of a 3.05-acre parcel on NC 87 North in Barbecue Township from RA-20 (rural agricultural) to Commercial.
Sarah Arber of Harnett County Development Services presented the request for Barnwell Capital LLC. Staff reported the parcel, previously the site of a gas station and convenience store, has public water and sewer and direct access to NC 87, which staff said sees approximately 26,000 daily trips. The property is in a highway corridor overlay district and in the county's "rural center" land-use designation, which staff said supports small-scale commercial development.
Staff recommended approval after finding the request compatible with surrounding nonresidential uses and existing infrastructure. The Harnett County Planning Board voted 4-0 to recommend approval at its Sept. 2 meeting. The chairman opened and closed a public hearing with no members of the public speaking in opposition. The commissioners approved the rezoning unanimously.
The board did not set additional conditions beyond standard overlay-district standards. County staff said the parcel's access and available utilities made commercial use appropriate for the site.
Barnwell Capital LLC is the applicant; the parcel is located at NC 87 North and Olivia Road in Barbecue Township. The matter will appear in county records as Plan 25-002 (rezoning request).
