County approves online auction of surplus equipment, authorizes notices for disposal

Coffey County commissioners approved a motion to publish notice of the county’s intent to dispose of assorted surplus equipment and to allow those items to be sold through an online auction platform.
Road and bridge staff reported the list of items includes an old 10-foot bush hog (stripped for parts), three 8,500-gallon asphalt tanks that have not been used in decades, a side boom mower, concrete pier forms and footing forms, a pile of millings at the intersection of U.S. 50 and U.S. 75 that staff said have been stored for years, an old crack filler replaced last year, an I-beam frame, trailer-house frame and other scrap metal. The sheriff’s office has also coordinated use of the online auction vendor used in previous sales.
Notice and publication: County staff said the board intends to publish notice of disposition of county property in the county’s official newspaper on Sept. 18 and Sept. 25, 2025, as required by statute. The motion to publish the notice and to proceed with auctioning the items was moved (moved by McCurry; seconded by Barker) and approved by voice vote.
Why it matters: Staff said most of the items have no ongoing public use and are taking storage space; auctioning them returns small amounts to county coffers and clears yard space. Staff noted the pile of millings has been stored for years and may have limited market value, but the auction will allow interested buyers to bid.
Next steps: Staff will coordinate with the online auction vendor, prepare detailed sale descriptions and publish the required notices. Items will be offered through the vendor’s online platform with terms and timing managed by the vendor and county staff.
