The Dickinson County Commission voted to deny a property owner’s request to waive interest and penalties assessed on delinquent property taxes.
County staff said the taxpayer had visited the treasurer’s office and administration seeking a written waiver. Staff reported that the county had mailed outreach letters to nearly 100 taxpayers with delinquencies for 2020 and 2021 to encourage payment plans and avoid tax sale; that publication in the newspaper had also listed delinquents as part of the tax sale process; and that the county asks other delinquent taxpayers to follow the same collection rules.
Commissioners discussed fairness and consistency and noted an earlier tax sale as background. They also said the property owner indicated an intention to make payments that could take several years to pay the balance. After discussion, a commissioner moved to deny the waiver request; another seconded and the motion passed with an aye vote from the board.
No further conditions or alternative abatements were recorded in the meeting minutes. Staff said they would provide the property owner a written denial letter as requested.
