County staff and representatives from the North Central Regional Planning Commission briefed the Board of Commissioners on a planned Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application under the downtown commercial rehabilitation category for a facade and storefront rehabilitation at 109 Northwest Third Street (the Steinhaugers building) in Abilene.
Staff described the project scope as main‑floor storefront glass replacement, masonry repairs and facade work to unify and improve three storefronts along the south entrance to downtown Abilene. Commissioners were told one business had committed to occupy space and another had strong interest; the hoped‑for construction window was roughly six to nine months out if funding is awarded.
Deb (identified as director of the North Central Regional Planning Commission) will serve as grant administrator if the application proceeds. County staff said they planned to submit the application to the Kansas Department of Commerce on or about Sept. 22 and to return to the commission for signatures and final approval on the Sept. 18 agenda.
The board opened the public hearing for comment and, after waiting the customary period, recorded that there were no public comments and closed the hearing. No formal county action was taken at the hearing; staff will proceed with final application paperwork and bring the item back to the commission for required signatures and final submission.
