Sedgwick County staff briefed commissioners during an agenda review that the county is a participant in an upcoming settlement with secondary opioid manufacturers and that the county will need governing-body action to accept any settlement proceeds.
Justin Weider, county council, summarized the item as “a settlement with secondary manufacturers,” saying there are eight parties in the agreement and that “the state of Kansas is participating.” He said the county’s ability to receive funds depends on the governing body taking the necessary action.
Tom, a county staff member, noted the county does not yet know the precise dollar amount it would receive from the settlement. Staff told the commission that, consistent with prior opioid settlements, any proceeds would be placed into the county’s specialized opioid settlement account.
The agenda-review discussion did not include a formal vote; staff said further fiscal details will be provided when available. Commissioners did not take action during the briefing; the item is on the commission agenda for formal consideration.
