Eastwood Elementary and Roseburg High give school-year updates; attendance, curriculum and student engagement highlighted

Principal Jay Hughes told the board Eastwood Elementary is focusing on kindness, attendance outreach and new literacy work as the school year begins. "Eastwood is a special place," Hughes said, describing the school's outdoor classroom, fish hatchery, school garden partnership with Umpqua Valley Farm to School and monthly family assemblies.
Hughes described academic indicators from the Oregon Assessment of Student Standards (OSAS) for grades 3'5 and internal diagnostic data. He said 46 percent of students scored at least grade level on a building diagnostic at the end of last year, and that the district is seeing "gap score changes" indicating catch-up growth for some students. Hughes outlined targeted interventions including empathy interviews for roughly 52 students identified with marginal attendance and additional teacher-led meetings to address learning deficits.
Hughes also described a Monday-morning video message to families and partnerships with community organizations and noted investments in staff to support social-emotional learning.
Roseburg High representatives Ryan Wilson and Janelle Melling gave the high-school report, citing a successful freshman orientation hosted by Link Crew, a senior sunrise event and a well-attended home football tailgate. They said auditions and casting for the fall production of Macbeth are complete and performances are expected in mid-November. Marching band director Mr. Hanson was credited with a strong start to the season, and Wilson/Melling outlined athletic schedules and upcoming home games for football, volleyball and soccer.
The high-school presentation included a Link Crew video; Link Crew advisor Caitlin Weaver described the program as "a group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors that come together to create an experience where freshmen are able to come inside with their nervousness and we knock off that nervousness by just having our confidence and our ability of what we know around the school." The board and presenters said Link Crew and the middle-school WEB program help students in transitional grades feel connected to the school community.
No formal board action was taken on the reports; both building teams will return with additional updates during the school year.
