Gunnison council approves $15,000 purchase of modern extrication tools for fire department

The Gunnison City Council voted to approve a $15,000 purchase of new extrication (rescue) tools for the city fire department, council members said at the start of the meeting.
Council members said the equipment is being offered through a manufacturer liquidation and represents roughly a half-price opportunity compared with new list prices the council was shown. Officials described the tools as battery-operated and lighter than the department’s older, hydraulically powered equipment.
City staff told the council the purchase can be funded from the city’s PTIF savings that had been reserved for a brush truck; the brush truck will be provided by the district, freeing the PTIF money for this need. Council members recorded the purchase as a budgeted expense and voted in favor of the procurement.
The council’s roll call recorded unanimous approval: Childs — yes; Warner — yes; Hill — yes; Anderson — yes. The motion authorizes the fire department to buy the extrication set for $15,000.
The council and staff said the tools are intended to reduce equipment weight and operational complexity on the rare occasions the department must perform vehicle extrication. No additional public comment was recorded on the item.
