The Forest Lake Area Schools board argued over proposed replacement language for the district’s administration-policy series Thursday and voted to refer the six draft policies to the district’s policy advisory committee for review.
Board members raised two recurring concerns during more than 90 minutes of discussion: whether the draft language provided sufficient accountability detail and whether the policy-advisory committee was the appropriate place to finalize administrator-level items. Several members said the current administration policies were outdated and included operational job descriptions the board does not typically manage.
“Some of them aren't even relevant,” board Chair said during the consent-and-policy discussion, and asked for a path forward that would allow adjustments without violating open-meeting limitations on serial deliberations.
Member Antonson moved to postpone action; that motion was amended and replaced with a motion to commit the six draft policies (labeled 1301–1306) to the policy advisory committee. After a division and multiple roll calls, the motion to send the drafts to policy passed. The revised schedule gives the policy committee time to consider the drafts and return recommended language to the board in October.
Several board members emphasized they wanted to see clearer language on annual review of administrative procedures and on delineation between board-set policy and superintendent-level administrative directives. Others urged care to avoid off‑line meetings of quorums while the committee prepares suggested edits.
Ending: The board’s formal vote sends the six draft administration policies to the district’s policy advisory committee; the board and administration said they will expect the committee’s work to return to the board for further consideration.
