Board amends 2025–26 student fees to add FBLA trip and intervention drug-testing fees

The Box Elder School District board voted Sept. 10 to amend the 2025–26 general student-fees schedule to add a fee for Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) participation tied to a planned visit to the Utah Jazz business operations and to add a $25 fee for intervention student drug testing when parents are asked to pay for testing as part of tiered student interventions.
Corey Thompson, the FBLA advisor, described a new partnership with the Utah Jazz that will give students a behind-the-scenes look at the team’s business operations; the district said the fee change applies to both Box Elder High School and Bear River High School and that the published fee schedule sets maximum fees (individual schools’ spending plans may set lower fees).
On the intervention testing item, administrators said the district sometimes asks parents to pay for drug testing when it is part of tier‑2 or tier‑3 interventions for students with alleged or identified substance use issues. The board approved adding a $25 line item to reflect the actual cost of the test when parents are asked to cover it.
A motion to approve the fee amendments for FBLA and intervention testing — and to note additional small club fees listed in consent items — passed on a voice vote with a second and no recorded roll-call tally.
Why it matters: The approved changes codify program-specific fees and ensure the fee schedule reflects practices already in use for some student interventions. Administrators emphasized the fees represent maximums and that schools may charge less depending on each program’s spending plan.
Implementation notes: The amendment includes language that local school spending plans can set actual fees at or below the approved maximums; district staff said the FBLA and other new club fees would be reflected in consent items and spending plans.
