Board members discussed how the district is implementing a strategic plan through routine, district-wide practices called “always actions,” and through short-cycle goal setting with measurable metrics.
During the presentation, a district presenter described “always actions” as behaviors or programs that are hardwired across schools — examples cited included Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and professional learning communities. The presenter said short-cycle goals run on roughly 60- to 90-day intervals; teams set measurable targets, evaluate progress at the end of each cycle and then pivot or continue actions based on data.
Board member Christine Stephenson said a short list of the district’s top always actions would help trustees avoid working in silos and better monitor consistency across schools. Dr. Thompson (the superintendent) said the district plans to share its annual goals and short-cycle metrics with the board in October so trustees will be fully aware of targets and measures.
Trustees also raised practical ideas to improve parent/caregiver survey response rates. One board member suggested offering surveys at parent-teacher conference nights and other school events — for example, providing computers or stations at a school’s conference night so families can complete surveys on site — because email invitations alone can be overlooked.
The CFOO described the district’s approach to strategic planning as a “living, breathing plan” that ties daily “always actions” back to long-term strategy and short-cycle evaluation.
No formal board action was taken on these items at this meeting; presenters said additional materials and goal metrics will be shared with the board later this fall.
