Board members and staff explained federal nutrition program rules constrain use of kitchen equipment purchased with federal funds and that allowing outside groups to perform food preparation in the same food-prep spaces could jeopardize compliance.
"Those are federal dollars, and Laura has to meet criteria in order to use federal dollars to purchase those," an administrator said, explaining why food-prep spaces are tightly controlled. "If Gap is doing that, that hurts the school district," the administrator added, referencing procurement and nutritional guidelines. The board and directors said GAP will retain refrigeration access and can continue many snack and dietetics-intern collaboration activities, but the district will limit warm meal preparation in school food-prep areas unless staff-approved procedures are met.
Board action
A motion to accept the revised GAP site agreement was moved and seconded and passed by voice vote. The revisions were described as intended to "improve safety, security, and cleanliness in the school kitchens," and as a compromise preserving GAP participation while protecting federal nutrition requirements.
Next steps
Administrators encouraged GAP to continue dialogue with the district's food-service director, Laura, to clarify what the program still needs (such as limited warm meal prep on a specific day) and to work out operational details. Board members said they welcome GAP in district facilities and suggested a board representative can be added to future discussions if members want greater oversight.
