Enrollment and data systems
Dr. Schultz said official student counts are finalized the last Friday in September and that, for 2024'25, the district has returned to its earlier projected enrollment level after the unplanned increase last year. "We are back down to where we were before the influx last year that was not planned for," Dr. Schultz said. He noted differences across buildings: the high school is slightly up, the middle school is up a student, some elementary buildings are lower consistent with birth-rate trends, and Madera has grown.
The superintendent also reported an Infinite Campus software update over the summer did not migrate some special education records, requiring manual entry for students who receive services but are not enrolled in Brookings School District seats (for example, homeschooled or private-school students receiving services). Dr. Schultz said the district anticipates completing those entries within about a week.
Science lab renovation planning
The board also discussed planned science lab renovations at Brookings High School. Dr. Schultz said the district has authorized schematic design work and is assessing infrastructure like piping and HVAC capacity that could affect renovation cost and scope. "When you're doing a renovation such as the science labs, those are the most expensive, square-footage renovations you can do in a school because of the amount of piping and cabinetry," he said. The administration is awaiting a full infrastructure assessment and cost estimate to present for board decision.
Facilities scheduling and next steps
Dr. Schultz said a workshop meeting on Oct. 20 will include the project architect to summarize schematic design work and engage the board in detailed discussion. Administrators also reported upcoming meetings with the city regarding facilities and ongoing site work for off-site science lab space to support advanced coursework.
