Providence HOPE committee delays resolution, demands documents on Gilbert Stuart–Alfred Lima school project

Council President Pro Tempore Juan M. Pichardo convened the Providence City Council special committee on Health Opportunity, Prosperity and Education (HOPE) on Sept. 17 to consider a resolution calling on the city administration and Providence Public School District (PPSD) to provide all outstanding documents and to pause demolition activities at the Gilbert Stuart site until the council and community can review preservation, cost, and design analyses.

The resolution, read into the record by Pichardo, said the planned merger of Gilbert Stuart and Alfred Lima into a pre-K–8 dual-language academy offers opportunity for bilingual education but also raises concerns because "the administration has instead relied primarily on verbal assurances rather than clear written documentation," language that underscored the committee's request for project files and preservation analyses.
