Manor ISD reports security upgrades and a $3.4 million Travis County grant to expand after-school programs

Superintendent Dr. Sarmani updated the Manor Independent School District board on Sept. 15 about the district’s progress on school-safety recommendations and a recent county funding award for after-school programs.
Dr. Sarmani said the district has completed 36 of 53 recommended safety improvements, including lighting upgrades and signage across campuses and new and expanded fencing at Manor High School to create secure vestibules between buildings. He said additional, less elaborate fencing projects will be installed at other sites and that dates for completion were available for all recommended items except those that would rely on the next bond package (referred to in the meeting as the “28/20/25 bond package”); if that bond does not pass, the district will seek other funding options for those projects. Dr. Sarmani said Travis County Commissioners Court approved $3,400,000 on Aug. 26 for Manor ISD to provide free after-school and summer programs for families for two years. The funding will expand programs the Boys & Girls Club already operates; at the time of the meeting the funding was expected to cover all schools except Manor New Tech High School and Manor Middle School, and the district was “working with Boys & Girls Club to get funding to finalize those two schools as well so that we can have it at every single school.” He said the district hoped programs would begin no later than January and that the county-approved funding will cover the next two years. Dr. Sarmani also said some safety-work items depend on bond funding; he told trustees the district will pursue other options if voters do not approve the specified bond. He noted hiring activity associated with the after-school expansion and said the Boys & Girls Club was recruiting to staff the expanded programs.
Ending: The board did not take separate action on the safety-upgrade status at the Sept. 15 meeting; the Travis County funding item was described as an agreement the board would later be asked to accept during the meeting.
