City staff told the Cathedral City City Council Thursday that the city has no palm-tree–specific maintenance regulation and that the existing municipal code provides tools to address fire hazards, public-right-of-way debris and other safety issues caused by poorly maintained palms.
Andy Firestein, speaking for staff, outlined common desert palm species and noted local regulatory approaches used by neighboring jurisdictions, ranging from Indian Wells’ proactive mandatory trimming to Palm Desert’s nuisance-based approach. “We do not have a recommendation per se, but we want to share some information…so that we can determine whether further action is required,” Firestein said.
