Council hears park operations and trail-connection planning; Sheetz Family Park utilities budgeted

Parks director presented the parks department budget, noting the city will assume utility and maintenance responsibilities for the new Sheetz Family Park and staff included higher property and utility estimates for 2026 to accommodate that. The department expects to learn more about ongoing utility costs in 2027 after a year of operation.
Capital items include paving a drive to improve morning access, resurfacing, storage-area fencing repairs, routine mower and equipment replacements, and a vehicle trade-in. Staff said the park’s drive-in parking area bids are planned to open Oct. 1.
Separately, the council discussed a proposed feasibility study to connect the city trail to Trine University’s proposed trail; staff said the study will evaluate possible routes, including a route via Fox Lake or other alignments through the city, and that grant assistance on a federal aid application may be explored with the county.
