Three elementary special education teachers were introduced and recognized at a meeting of the St. Mary Parish Special Education Advisory Committee.
Dr. Fagan Busch read prepared remarks from Heidi Mouton, principal at LaGrange Elementary, praising the work of two teachers at that school. "She says that Miss Adrian and Miss Amanda have been successful growing their students with the belief that every child can learn," Dr. Fagan Busch read. The remarks noted that growth is sometimes measured in student confidence and relationships rather than test scores.
The teachers described their classroom approaches. Adrianne Minor, a fourth- and fifth-grade resource and self-contained teacher, said, "I'm a fourth and fifth grade resource teacher and also have self contained. I have 24 Children on my caseload." She described using inclusion to provide grade-level content and meeting students where they are.
Amanda Duran, a second- and third-grade resource and self-contained teacher at LaGrange, said she has "been teaching self special ed for 18 years" and described a mix of small-group pullout and inclusion work.
Ashley Perkle, a resource teacher at Hattie Watts Elementary, said she has "been in education for 10 years. The last 3 ... have been in the resource setting." Perkle said she uses inclusion and small-group pullouts and emphasized cooperation with classroom teachers and paraprofessionals. She said she has "21 kids on my caseload," and named Miriam McCoy as a para who supports instruction.
Committee members presented certificates and took photographs to recognize the teachers' work. The presentations were described as examples of the committee's regular practice of inviting classroom staff and school leaders to explain services and classroom strategies to committee members.
