Students ask Ringgold SD to recognize high school gymnastics team; board approves volunteer coach and outlines process to form team

Students and parents asked the Ringgold School District Board of Education to recognize a high school gymnastics team during the public-comment portion of the meeting; the board approved a volunteer coach for individual athletes and clarified the administrative steps required to convert the group into an officially sanctioned team.

A student speaker told the board that middle-school gymnasts are looking forward to high-school gymnastics and that the group was not seeking district funds, transportation or uniforms at this time but was asking to be “recognized as a team.” The commenter said, “We are not asking for any money, transportation, or uniforms. We just wanna be recognized as a team.”

Board members and staff explained that approval of a volunteer coach is a preliminary step because the district does not yet have a formal gymnastics team. A staff member noted that district paperwork to the WPI must be submitted before Jan. 7 to request creation of a team for the following season. The staff member said that if the paperwork were submitted now it would apply to the next school year; in the interim, the athletes could compete at the club level and in exhibition meets while the district seeks to place a newly created team in a competitive section the following year.

Board discussion included clarification that creating an official team requires a separate administrative process and likely a separate board action: approving a volunteer coach does not, by itself, establish a sanctioned, record-bearing team. Board members also discussed scheduling and the number-of-athletes threshold for team formation; the transcript records a question — “How many do you need for the team?” — but does not record a specific numeric threshold in the meeting.
