The Seaford Board of Education on Sept. 15 approved a staff recommendation to correct the district’s school-tax distribution after staff identified rounding differences between the district’s internal calculations and the state system’s four‑decimal reporting limit.
Finance staff explained the issue to the board as a rounding-and-distribution discrepancy: the district calculates distributions using more decimal places than the state system supports, which in one prior submission resulted in an item being reported as 0.26 when the correct state‑reported value should have been 0.25. Staff estimated the adjustment shifted roughly $3,000 among budget categories (staff described this as an estimate).
During the financial report, staff said the district collected about $34,000 in taxes in the most recent month, with roughly $18,000 of that in delinquent collections, and reported about $82,000 collected year-to-date. Staff also noted an encumbrance of $1,070,365 for HVAC/buildings-and-grounds work that is reflected as a set-aside.
District staff said they received about 15 phone calls from residents asking about tax-bill changes and that finance staff personally reviewed and returned each of those calls; most questions focused on the mechanics of assessment changes versus rate changes and on eligibility for senior and disabled‑veteran tax credits. Staff said only one caller appeared to qualify for the state payment‑plan option (a program described in state legislation and handled through a state portal).
The board approved the corrected tax distribution by voice vote; the transcript records "all in favor, say aye" and the chair declaring the motion carries. Staff said they will submit the corrected distribution to the state Department of Education for final reporting.
Ending: Board members were told questions from residents should continue to be fielded personally, and staff said they will post or otherwise communicate clarifications about the assessment and revenue-neutral explanations in coming weeks.
