White Plains High School names four inductees for 2025 Hall of Fame

The White Plains Board of Education meeting on Sept. 8 included an announcement of four inductees to the White Plains High School Hall of Fame who will be formally inducted on Thursday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. in the high school's media center.

Amy Geiger, who presented the slate to the board, said the Hall of Fame recognizes distinguished graduates and staff and that inductees typically spend time with students during the school day. "The Hall of Fame not only celebrates the achievements of truly outstanding graduates, but it also recognizes the contributions of our high school teachers and staff," Geiger said.

The 2025 inductees named in the presentation, listed in order of graduation year, are Carl Austin (Class of 1958); Susan Altman (Class of 1964); Jonette Mines (Class of 1978); and Daniel Slepian (Class of 1988). Geiger summarized their backgrounds: Austin as a long-time local real estate developer and community trustee; Altman as a longtime White Plains High School teacher and founder of programs promoting diversity and international exchange; Mines as president of the White Plains Juneteenth Heritage Committee and an active community organizer; and Slepian as an award-winning investigative producer at NBC News noted for reporting on wrongful convictions.

Geiger said the inductees will meet with students during the school day and participate in the Oct. 23 ceremony in the media center. She noted the Hall of Fame has inducted about 90 graduates since its inception in 1996 and that the selection committee includes school and community representatives.

Board members thanked Geiger and the selection committee and encouraged community attendance at the induction ceremony.
