Sergeant Norton presented August statistics: deputies responded to 229 calls for service and recorded 938 self‑initiated activities, including 324 traffic stops. Notable incidents included a theft at the Rod and Reel, destruction of property at a residence on 20 Sixth Street and damage to ropes at the pier at Horizons on the Bay; deputies are reviewing video and body‑cam footage to identify suspects. Sergeant Norton also noted several arrests for controlled dangerous substances and two domestic assault incidents that led to charges.
The council and residents praised deputies' patrols and the department's use of K‑9 units for successful stops. Norton said officers have been checking areas of concern at Richfield Station and will continue increased patrols when complaints are received.
The mayor introduced Lieutenant Tom Phelps, who described his promotion and experience, including prior service in the beach detachment and a background in special events and investigations. Phelps encouraged residents to contact him with concerns and said he looks forward to community engagement.
The council also heard from the North Beach Volunteer Fire Department. Scott Kaiser, vice president, said the department purchased a new UTV equipped with a 200‑gallon water tank to improve access on trails and in tight neighborhoods. He reported the department's main rescue boat is out of service pending custom repairs to the pump and transmission; a temporary boat is being sought. Kaiser said the department had 53 fire runs recently and noted heavier activity during colder months, but said no unusual trends were identified in local causes.
