A group of Norwalk seniors urged the council to help restore instructor‑led fitness classes at the Norwalk Sports Complex after the class they attend lost its instructor in June 2025 and, they said, no replacement candidates have been interviewed in the three months since.
Rebecca Munoz, speaking for the group, said the strengthening class averages more than 30 seniors per session and that the program aids recovery from surgeries and maintains seniors' health and social connections. She said prior cancellations and delays have left seniors "lost" in the gym and asked the city to recruit instructors and preserve classes including Zumba, yoga, strengthening and tai chi.
Parks and recreation staff responded on the record: Recreation Director Gomez (as named by the mayor's response) was asked to connect Munoz with the recreation department to address recruitment and scheduling. City staff said they would follow up to determine instructor recruitment status and report back to the speaker.
Why it matters: Senior‑oriented recreation programs provide health and social benefits for older residents; speakers said continuity and adequate staffing are essential to preserving those benefits.
