A board member said the existing policy, which was likely adopted decades ago, required student teachers to hold a New Jersey substitute certificate, a credential many student teachers do not possess and that has become costlier and more administratively complex to obtain. Staff said the requirement effectively prevented some student-teachers from coming to the district.
District staff told the board the provision was optional when originally adopted and had not been used recently; the recommendation is to remove the requirement to align the policy with current practice and to remove a barrier to placements. The board agreed to put the change up for a first reading in October.
No formal vote was recorded Sept. 11; staff will prepare the policy language for first reading.
