Board notes donations, Special Olympics grant and sponsor lineup as school year begins

The Township of Ocean Board of Education reviewed donor and grant items on its Sept. 16 agenda, including a 20-backpack donation, new percussion kits for the intermediate school band and a Special Olympics New Jersey grant designed to support inclusion and a unified club.

School Business Administrator Hastings identified agenda item 9.2 as a donation from Saint George Greek Orthodox Church: "They donated 20 backpacks full of supplies to the district." He also told the board the district received percussion kits from Gina McKeever for the intermediate school band and said the Special Olympics New Jersey grant was in place to emphasize inclusion and allow a unified club to operate for the full school year.

Separately, the district presented sponsorships for board approval. Hastings said seven sponsors were being approved at the gold level, five of which were repeats from the prior year; two years ago one sponsor had been at the platinum level, accounting for a higher fee then. Hastings said the district has been consistent in recruiting roughly seven to eight sponsors each year and that the funds from sponsorships had been similar year to year.

The board also heard a first reading of board goals (agenda item 11.2). Hastings and other members noted the goals would be revisited and the board is not restricted to a tight timeline for finalizing them.
