The Easton School Committee voted Sept. 4 to approve three transportation contracts to support students covered under the McKinney‑Vento Act, adopt updated Oliver Ames handbooks, accept an anonymous staff donation and authorize a $5,000 internal budget transfer. Committee members declined to grant a local mortgage company blanket use of the district logo.
The committee’s actions included three separate contract approvals for McKinney‑Vento transportation: ADA Transportation ($88,000 not‑to‑exceed), Purple Lady Transportation ($88,000 not‑to‑exceed) and Alpha Ride/Alpha Bridal Pupil Transportation ($60,000 not‑to‑exceed). The committee approved each contract by recorded roll call; every voting member present voted “yes.” The contracts are for McKinney‑Vento transportation obligations (students who qualify as homeless under federal law); administrators said the not‑to‑exceed figures are conservative estimates and that the district will return to the committee if spending approaches the contract ceilings.
The committee also approved the Oliver Ames (OA) student handbook and the OA student athletics handbook after edits requested at the Aug. 14 meeting were incorporated. The athletic handbook addendum includes new language on roster expectations (no automatic roster guarantee except a three‑year varsity participation exception for seniors). The committee voted to adopt both documents by roll call.
Separately the committee accepted an anonymous donation of $2,620.72 to purchase a small retractable multiuse charger, branded with the district logo, as a welcome gift for staff at opening day. Members voted to accept the donation. The committee also approved a $5,000 budget transfer for Richardson Olmsted School: $2,500 moved to instructional supplies and $2,500 to textbooks, shifted from a replacement‑of‑equipment line.
On a request from a private company, Movement Mortgage sought permission to use the Easton Public Schools logo on a pocket calendar/magnet the company proposed to distribute. Several members expressed concern that allowing a local business to use the district logo could be interpreted as an endorsement and would create an awkward precedent; the motion to allow logo use did not receive a second and therefore was not approved. Committee members asked administration to request additional details (distribution plan, quantities, whether the item is a donation, limits on future uses and any proposed disclaimer language) if the company wants the committee to reconsider.
Other formal votes taken Sept. 4 included approval of several sets of meeting minutes (regular and workshop minutes for July and June) and the committee’s appointment of Chair Lauren Loomis as the association delegate to the Massachusetts Association of School Committees (MASC) annual meeting and Jim Hamilton as alternate delegate. As part of routine minute handling, the committee approved but did not release two executive‑session minute records (June 10 and June 25) citing the possibility of ongoing confidential matters.
What the votes mean - Transportation: The district secured not‑to‑exceed contracts to meet federally required McKinney‑Vento transport obligations; administrators said they will report back if contract use approaches the ceilings so the committee can approve increases. - Handbooks: The OA handbook changes are effective with adoption; administrators said they will track implementation and return with revisions if needed. - Movement Mortgage request: Committee members asked for more information and for a defined approval process if the company wishes to pursue use of the district name or brand.

Sources and next steps Committee members asked administration to return with more detail before any logo use is approved, and administrators said they will notify the committee if any of the transportation contracts approach their not‑to‑exceed amounts. Administrators also said they will track athletic roster outcomes this year and report back if the handbook language has unintended consequences for seniors or transfer students.
