District reiterates safety protocols; ALICE training ongoing with police

District leaders updated the Walpole School Committee on Sept. 11 about safety and emergency protocols in all schools, including controlled access, security cameras and ALICE training with local police.
The superintendent (name not specified in the meeting transcript) said all school entrances remain locked during the day and card-access control systems are installed in each building. "All entrances are locked at all times ... these cards are required in order for staff to enter the buildings," the superintendent said.
The superintendent said visitors are admitted through main offices after visual screening via entrance cameras and intercom systems. Classrooms have telephones and intercoms, key locations have emergency alert buttons, and specialized staff use two-way radios to improve communication. Each school maintains a crisis response team and a threat-safety assessment team to monitor student well-being.
The superintendent said he continues to communicate with Chief Kelleher and that Officer Hart from the Walpole Police Department has been conducting ALICE training in schools. "Officer Hart has been setting up and conducting ALICE training with our schools," the superintendent said. Committee members invited the police chief and Officer Hart to attend a future meeting.
Committee members also discussed a noted increase in electric bikes and scooters in the area and were asked to remind students about helmet use and situational awareness.
