The Walpole School Committee voted unanimously on Sept. 11 to accept year-end student activity account balances for the district and to approve a new VIP Cafe club at Walpole Middle School.
Mike, the district business-office representative, summarized the accounts and the oversight structure for activity funds, saying these are family-funded and held in custody by schools until expenses are paid. He outlined several larger balances: Walpole High School's film club (about $22,000, with approximately $12,000 planned for new high-end editing computers), a middle school ski-trip account (about $9,003.14) and a Special Olympics account (about $10,002). Elm Street School elementary activity balances were cited around $18,600; a field-trip account had a payment of $4,009.82 recorded as of June 30.
On a motion to approve the year-end balances and add the VIP Cafe club (presented for Mary Brogan), the committee recorded a vote of 6–0–0. Motion by Mr. Beckins; second by Mr. Wing.
Committee discussion touched on oversight and use of accumulated balances. Mike said accounts are audited on a three-year rotating cycle and principals may close inactive accounts and roll funds into other activity accounts at their discretion. Committee members asked about scholarship uses for balances that have grown over time, and administrators said district and principals plan targeted scholarships to reduce financial barriers for participation.
The committee did not modify operating-budget spending; members confirmed that student activity accounts are separate from the district operating budget.
