Davis Education Foundation wins no-fee Western Sports Park rental for December Grab-and-Go fundraiser

The Davis County Commission on Sept. 16 approved a no-fee rental of Building 5 at Western Sports Park for the Davis Education Foundation’s annual Grab-and-Go kit fundraiser, scheduled for Dec. 3, 2025.

The action began when a commissioner moved to pull item 19 from the consent calendar so the foundation’s organizers could speak. Ginger Coulam, who identified herself as representing the Davis Education Foundation, described the program and asked the commission to approve use of the space at no charge.

Coulam said the foundation supports about 1,500 homeless and at-risk children in the Davis School District and has helped build teen centers that provide showers, laundry, food and study space. She described the Grab-and-Go kits as protein-oriented food packages intended for students who cannot cook or who need a portable meal. “For the last 4 years, the Farmington State has made grab-and-go’s,” Coulam said, and the foundation previously hosted the event at the Davis Conference Center. She said the closer location will reduce travel barriers for participating youth.

Coulam provided financial details from the prior year: “we received money donations of just under $12,000,” and she said students assembled about 1,500 grab-and-go packages and “then they also put together and earned donated $340.10 dollar gift cards,” language she used in her presentation.

A commissioner who introduced the motion said the county had worked with the tourism department and the management company to make the space available in past years. The commission voted in favor of the item; the motion to approve the Western Sports Park rental agreement carried and the county committed the no-fee use of Building 5 for Dec. 3.

The approved arrangement is a one-day, no-fee rental for a nonprofit fundraiser. Commissioners’ discussion emphasized lowering travel barriers for participating youth and the educational value of engaging students in fundraising and volunteer work.

The commission’s action followed public comment and a brief presentation by foundation staff. No changes to the rental terms were recorded in the hearing.

The commission returned to the consent calendar after the vote and continued with other business.
