State Representative Kimberly Edwards addressed the St. Clair Shores City Council on Sept. 15 to describe the potential local impact of a budget stalemate in Lansing.
Edwards said she represents parts of Wayne and Macomb counties, including South St. Clair Shores and Eastpointe, and warned that if the state fails to pass a budget soon, funding delays could affect projects the city relies on for roads and public safety. She said the schools could face program cuts or be forced to borrow and that administrative functions such as Secretary of State licensing and inspections could be delayed.
Edwards emphasized that emergency services would continue, but that a prolonged failure to enact a budget by Oct. 1 could trigger a wider shutdown affecting more than 55,000 individuals, she said. She offered to meet with council members and staff to discuss city priorities and to coordinate on legislative requests.
Council members suggested setting up a follow-up meeting with city staff to identify top priorities for the district. Edwards said she had been meeting with constituents across her district and asked to work with city administration to schedule a time to go deeper into local issues.
