Hubbardston to celebrate Dotty Rock Trail ribbon cutting; board authorizes certificate for project lead

Town officials said the Dotty Rock Trail was paid for with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds together with a MassTrails grant and a town match of roughly $16,000. The board’s motion directs the town administrator to sign the certificate and have it presented by the chair at the opening ceremony.
Town Administrator Nate (last name not specified in the meeting) described the trail as ADA‑accessible, located at the end of Malone Road and approximately four‑tenths of a mile one way. He said the project included accessible parking and features such as a storybook trail and a butterfly garden built in part by a local Girl Scout troop. The original plan had included a more elaborate overlook structure, but that element was scoped back after engineers indicated required plans would double the cost.
Resident Mike South (5 Glenbard Road) and other committee members had recommended honoring Mark Kresge, whom staff credited with leading the application and completion work. The board voted to move the certificate authorization to “matters not anticipated,” then approved language authorizing the town administrator to prepare the certificate and present it at the Sept. 17 grand opening.
The Select Board announced the ribbon cutting location as Malone Road; organizers are asking people to arrive at 2 p.m. The town posted the event and a registration link on the municipal website and social media.
Officials said the trail construction was completed using a MassTrails grant with the town contributing matching funds; the town administrator and members of the Open Space Committee were listed as partners in the project. No additional town appropriation was reported at the meeting.
