Voters approved an article authorizing the Board of Selectmen to convey or grant interests in a parcel of town-owned land for conservation purposes connected to planned athletic improvements at Ted Williams Camp.
The article, presented by a selectman and supported by the finance committee, would allow the selectmen to convey a conservation interest in a portion of the town-owned property on Holland Road as mitigation in connection with building two athletic fields at Ted Williams Camp. Town officials said the parcel for potential conservation is also town-owned and would be used to offset impacts from the camp improvements.
Members of the public asked about wildlife habitat on the property, including whether protected turtle habitat exists. Officials responded that state and local resource reviews inform any mitigation; town counsel and conservation staff will follow usual permitting and environmental review processes. The finance committee recommended passage by majority vote. The moderator called for a voice vote; the article passed by majority.
The selectmen and the conservation organization will complete required permits and any necessary written agreements to carry out the conveyance and mitigation.
