The Police Station Building Committee voted unanimously March 6 to approve a change order that moves the new police station's substantial completion date to June 4, 2019.
Committee members said the contractor, AP Whitaker, requested more time to account for owner-initiated upgrades and accumulated change orders. Taylor (staff member) told the committee the contractor calculated a total of 69 days tied to changes but is requesting 33 additional working days (about 43 calendar days) rather than the full total, and that AP Whitaker would not charge additional general conditions or costs for the extra time.
The committee heard a construction progress update from Bob (construction representative), who reported progress across trades: septic field about 80% complete, sprinkler work 90% complete, electrical work roughly 75% complete, acoustical ceiling grid to start next week, and the emergency generator set on its concrete pad. Committee members said overall progress was strong, and the extension was presented as ‘time only’ to avoid accelerating work at the finish.
Committee members noted the change order must also be approved by the Board of Selectmen after the building committee signs it. Taylor said the extension is handled contractually through a change order and that the smaller subcommittee had reviewed and supported the request. A motion to extend the completion date to June 4, 2019, was made and seconded and carried unanimously.
Budget materials circulated at the meeting incorporated change order activity through Change Order No. 7; the committee will see final change-order pricing at a subsequent meeting. The committee also discussed owner costs for additional meetings and on-site representation that may require a contract amendment separate from the time-extension change order.
The committee scheduled its next regular meeting for April 3, 2019.
