The Lakeville Board of Health announced on Sept. 17 that the first positive mosquito for the season was detected in town; no human cases of mosquito‑borne disease have been identified in Lakeville.
Ed, the Board’s agent, told the meeting the town received notice that the first positive mosquito was found in Lakeville that day. He said there have been five human cases in Massachusetts overall this year but none in Lakeville. The board said the detection could persist until the first hard frost and reminded parents and field users to use repellant as appropriate.
Board staff also explained that Plymouth County Mosquito Control continues scheduled roadway and priority area spraying and that the program’s individual resident request spraying had ended for the season. The board noted that the county still performs town‑level spraying on a routine schedule and that the county’s schedule is posted on the Plymouth County Mosquito Control website.
Why it matters: detection of infected mosquitoes increases the risk window for mosquito‑borne illnesses in the region and triggers public reminders about personal protective measures and the county spray schedule.
