Commissioners discuss potential FrontRunner station relocation and local connections; no formal action

At its Sept. 11 meeting the Saratoga Springs Planning Commission discussed a citizen inquiry about a possible relocation of the FrontRunner commuter rail station in nearby American Fork and whether Saratoga Springs has a formal position on the matter. No formal action or direction was recorded.

A commissioner said the city had received an email from a concerned resident about pending items on American Fork’s agenda relating to a potential station relocation. A staff member responded that planning staff had not been directly involved in any station-relocation discussions but have been studying options to connect Saratoga Springs to FrontRunner — including routing a connection through the Pony Express Corridor, and considering Pioneer Crossing for roadway widening and multimodal connections. The staff member said a likely connection would route through Lehi and American Fork to tie in with FrontRunner and that several corridor options remain under study.

Commissioners noted a recent agenda item in American Fork appeared to propose moving the station slightly north, near the Old Mill/Pioneer Crossing area, and discussed whether that would affect Saratoga Springs’ connection options. The staff member said multiple routing options still exist (northeast or southeast tie-ins from Old Mill) and recommended staff review American Fork’s materials; the staff member said they would forward a link to the item and that council and mayoral offices had received copies of the proposal.

No vote or formal direction to staff was recorded in the commission’s public record during the meeting.
