The Quincy Zoning Board of Appeals voted to allow a variance for 24 Vershires Street on Sept. 9, 2025, permitting demolition of an existing one‑car garage and construction of a two‑car garage with storage above.
Applicant Andrew Childs told the board he had revised the design after feedback at an earlier hearing: the structure’s height was reduced by 3 feet, 8 inches to 20 feet, the footprint was trimmed about 2 feet in each direction, and second‑floor windows were reduced to restrict conversion to habitable space. Childs said the changes lower usable second‑floor area below the building‑code threshold for habitable space, adding that “I'm willing to sunset that, not pursue that any further. All I want here is additional storage space.”
Neighbors who spoke in favor said the proposed building would improve the block; Linda Brown, 23 Vershires Street, called it “a lovely addition,” and Loretta Grant, 30 Bridal Street, said the owners take “impeccable care” of their property. One board member expressed concern that an interior staircase could enable conversion later; others said a full stair improves safety compared with pull‑down ladders.
After questions about interior ceiling heights and access the board voted to allow the petition. The applicant agreed to submit final plan details to the building department per the board’s instructions.
