Councilors discussed a proposal to use city land-sale surplus funds toward construction of a Roy Fire training center during the Sept. 16 meeting.
Council member Brian (proponent) said the training center would let firefighters train locally and receive an apparatus for training rather than traveling outside the city. He asked the council to consider contributing a remaining estimated balance (roughly $75,000) from one-time land-sale proceeds; several donors and fundraising efforts were already in place.
Several council members expressed support in principle but asked to delay committing city funds given current budget pressures. One councilor said the proposal fit the city's criteria for one-time funds, but that the council should allow on-going fundraising efforts to continue and re-evaluate after the first of the year. Another councilor suggested citywide outreach and individually contacting potential donors to build momentum.
The council did not approve any transfer of surplus funds at the meeting. Members asked the proponent to continue fundraising, to share donor materials so councilors can assist outreach, and to return with a specific funding request once the private fundraising progress is clearer.
