Planning Commission approves electronic message center sign at Maverik on 200 North

The Kaysville Planning Commission on Sept. 11 approved a conditional use permit to allow electrical upgrades to an existing freestanding electronic message center (EMC) sign at 888 West 200 North, the Maverik service station.

Planning staff said the proposal would replace electrical components in the existing sign while leaving the sign in its current location and height. The property is zoned A1 (Light Agricultural) but the sign is evaluated under the city—s sign regulations in Title 17, Chapter 33. "The sign as proposed meets the requirements for EMC signs both, in terms of not causing glare or rapid blinking or impeding, vehicular traffic or pedestrians," staff said, and recommended approval.

Staff reported that a notice sign was posted Sept. 5 and that staff received a single phone inquiry asking about the sign—s purpose; the caller was satisfied after staff explained the project and no written opposition was submitted. Commissioners asked about the sign height and whether it complied with allowances for proximity to I-15 and major streets; staff said the existing height complies with the freestanding sign standards given its proximity to 200 North and major streets.

After brief discussion, a commissioner moved to approve the permit "as stated as written," a second was recorded and the commission voted in favor. The motion carried and the commission approved the conditional use permit to allow the electrical upgrades to the existing EMC sign.

The decision approves only the electronic-message upgrades and the sign to remain in its current location and height; no additional changes to the sign footprint were approved.
