Sandpoint schedules two public wastewater outreach events, launches WWTP website; sewer projects near substantial completion

Public works director Holly Ellis introduced new project manager Rachel McKinley, who has taken lead on community engagement for the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) project. McKinley said the city launched a project website, www.sandpoint-wwtp.org, and has two public events scheduled in Council Chambers: Wednesday, Sept. 24 at 6 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 18 at 10 a.m. Mailers and utility bill inserts will provide information to voters ahead of the November election.
Ellis told council two sewer collection mainline projects and two lift station projects (City Beach and First & Superior) are wrapping up and are ready for substantial completion this week; the sewer main project is close behind.
On the Boyer culvert replacement, staff said the culvert is custom‑manufactured and delivery is expected in mid‑October to early November; the construction window is estimated at two to three weeks once the pipe is delivered. In the meantime, North Boyer remains on a detour.
Jason Welker also reported park improvements underway, including a new timber‑framed picnic shelter at Traverse Park with building permit work to follow once stamped drawings are received; a ribbon cutting for a playground replacement is scheduled for Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. Welker said the parks crew completed site preparations and poured footings for the new shelter.
Council members asked about outreach logistics. McKinley and Ellis said mailers would be delivered ahead of the events, staff will post information on the city website and social media, and staff will evaluate whether additional outreach is needed closer to the election.
