Council backs DOT safety work at Hayes Road and hears timeline for Old Monroe Road widening

The Indian Trail Town Council unanimously approved a resolution of support requested by N.C. Department of Transportation for a Highway 74/Hayes Road safety and access-improvement project. Town staff told council the work is fully funded through NCDOT safety funds and does not require local matching dollars.
Council member Clarence Alsobrooks, the town’s Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO) representative, gave an update on several regional projects. Alsobrooks said U‑4714BA (Old Monroe Road widening segments) is in right-of-way acquisition and utility relocation, and he quoted NCDOT staff indicating parts of the project have construction let dates in 2026 and 2028 depending on segment (Alsobrooks cited late‑2026 for one segment and 2028 for another). He also reported a separate safety improvement for Hayes Road at U.S. 74 had a construction let date in 2025 and that the DOT planned a directional crossover and signal adjustments to reduce dangerous U-turns and queuing at the intersection.
Town staff said DOT asked for a municipal resolution because the safety project exceeded the $250,000 threshold in DOT’s funding process; council approved the resolution so DOT can proceed with the design and advertisement. Council members said they expect expedited DOT coordination and thanked Alsobrooks and engineering staff for pursuing earlier let dates. No local funding commitment was requested or approved.
