Appearance Commission approves blade sign for 111 East Railroad Street
Summary
On Sept. 15, 2025, the Town of Selma Appearance Commission approved a 2-by-2 perpendicular (blade) sign for 111 East Railroad Street after staff recommended the design is consistent with the historic district and zoning code.
The Town of Selma Appearance Commission voted Sept. 15, 2025, to approve a 2-by-2 perpendicular blade sign for 111 East Railroad Street, a storefront owned by Holt Street Investments LLC and proposed by applicant Eric Veil.
Staff presented the application and recommended approval, saying the proposed white-background sign with green, purple and black lettering is consistent with the town’s historic district and zoning code. Taylor (staff) asked that the staff report and supporting documents be entered into the record as testimony. Taylor also confirmed the sign is a perpendicular hang sign (a blade sign) intended to be visible from the sidewalk.
Commission members asked a brief clarification about colors after a printed image showed a bluish tint; Taylor clarified that the “vintage” word is purple in the design and that Retrograde Vintage is the tenant name. Ms. Megan affirmed herself under oath for the quasi-judicial hearing record before testimony proceeded.
After accepting the staff testimony and documents, the commission moved to approve a certificate of appropriateness for the sign. The motion to open the quasi-judicial hearing was moved and seconded; the motion to accept testimony and documentation was moved by Ms. Smith and seconded by Dr. McCoy. The motion to approve the certificate of appropriateness was moved by Ms. Smith and seconded by Ms. Tyler and carried on an affirmative vote. The commission additionally authorized staff to sign the certificate of appropriateness so the document can be issued.
The application materials list the applicant as Eric Veil and the property owner as Holt Street Investments LLC. The proposed sign dimensions are 2 feet by 2 feet and the tenant name shown on the sign is Retrograde Vintage.
The commission’s approval followed the staff finding that the proposed sign meets the historic-district and zoning-code standards; no member recorded opposition during the on-the-record vote.
Looking ahead, staff will issue the certificate of appropriateness and include the signed findings in the property record.
