Supervisors OK walking trail on county land to use Blue Cross grant for school access

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Miss. — The Washington County Board of Supervisors voted Aug. 23 to allow Westernline Schools and its contractor to locate a walking trail on county property adjacent to O’Bannon school, a project funded by a $50,000 Blue Cross Blue Shield grant.
David Ronzeboff, attorney for Westernline Schools, contacted the county about siting the trail on county land near the baseball field and school to give students direct access. The superintendent had requested the location; county staff said Blue Cross’ grant requires the facility be sited close to the school so students will have ease of access.
Board members clarified that the county would not bear the grant’s construction cost and that the school or its partners would match and manage the project. One supervisor asked whether costs could exceed $50,000; county staff said the grant recipient is responsible for any additional costs and that the county’s role would be to grant permission and, if necessary, negotiate a lease or access agreement.
The board voted to move forward and authorized staff to work with the school’s representatives to prepare a site agreement and to proceed with coordination. The motion passed without recorded opposition.
Ending County staff will work with the school’s attorney and superintendent to finalize a short-term access agreement or lease if needed and will advise the board if the project requires additional county approvals.
