WASHINGTON COUNTY, Miss. — The Washington County Board of Supervisors on Aug. 23 approved a set of routine items including construction awards, right-of-way permits for fiber-optic work, a county burial policy and a revised meals/reimbursement policy.
The board voted to award an ERBR road contract for the Avondar(Avendara) Love Road project to Century Construction for $2,272,758.50 and authorized county staff to sign related paperwork and ask the state for the remaining $1,079,802.07 needed for the project.
Supervisors approved multiple right-of-way requests from telecommunications firms to place fiber along county roads. The board approved requests from a carrier identified as T&T, and two separate petitions from TechInfo Communications to install buried fiber along identified county roads; motions carried without recorded opposition.
The board adopted a written policy to govern county responsibility for unclaimed human remains that codifies the notice and time frames required under state law and formalized a $500 cap on county-funded burial services in the circumstances described by the policy. It also approved a revised county policy on meal reimbursements and per diems that requires agendas or registration documentation to determine whether meals are provided and allows exceptions for documented medical needs.
Other items approved during the meeting included: - Authorization for alcohol service at a private class reunion at the Washington Convention Center, carried with one recorded nay (Miss Bruce). - A waiver of fees for the Rotary Club’s “Rise Against Hunger” fundraiser scheduled March 21, 2026. - Engagement of Butler Snow for the county’s continuing disclosure work related to debt reporting. - Acceptance of an order from the Washington County Election Commission dispensing with an election contest in a single-candidate race. - A five-year extension option for the county’s lease with MEC (terms already approved), at the same staggered rate structure offered in the original term; the board also requested immediate payment of an outstanding six-month invoice from MEC.
The board also approved corrections to property assessments caused by an administrative exempt-code error for four parcels purchased from the state, and several routine administrative motions and minutes approvals.
