Douglas County Health Department accepts new grants for firearm safety, car seats and recurring programs

The Douglas County Board of Health voted on Sept. 11 to accept funding the department received since its March meeting, including recurring program allocations and several smaller grants.
Director Hill summarized the awards and told the board that the major items were recurring allocations the department had previously been authorized to accept. He highlighted two smaller summer grants: a firearm safety grant for distribution of gun locks and safes and a car‑seat grant from the E470 authority that supplies seats primarily to clients identified through WIC.
Laura, the program manager for the gun safety effort, explained the firearm safety program is voluntary and provides devices only to people who request them. "We're not collecting information from them. We're just giving them what they ask for and moving on," Hill said, describing the program as a voluntary resource for residents who want to secure firearms.
On car seats, Hill said the department purchases seats as needed (often for WIC clients) from UC children's hospital and provides them directly to families who need them.
After no public comment, the board moved and approved the acceptance of the funding allocations received after the March meeting.
The department said most of the large‑ticket items are ongoing programs and should not be news to the board, while smaller grants have supported targeted, voluntary services.
